CDC and FDA Warn of Multistate Salmonella and E. coli Outbreak Linked to Alfalfa Sprouts

August 22, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Public health officials are investigating a multistate outbreak of foodborne illness linked to alfalfa sprouts distributed by Everything Sprouts, LLC, of Minneapolis, Minnesota. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 55 individuals across 15 states have been infected with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and Salmonella Agona, with illness onset dates ranging from May 31, 2026, to August 8, 2026.

  • Contamination Source: Epidemiological and traceback data have identified alfalfa sprouts sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands as a source for the current outbreak.
  • Pathogen Profile: Patients have tested positive for multiple serotypes of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (O26:H11, O103:H25, O168:H8) and Salmonella Agona, with some individuals reporting coinfection.
  • Clinical Guidance: Consumers possessing these products should immediately discard them or return them to the point of purchase. Those experiencing symptoms that resemble an STEC or Salmonella infection should seek medical evaluation.

The investigation reveals a complex pattern of infection, as laboratory analysis has confirmed that 46 individuals were infected with E. coli, seven with Salmonella, and two with both pathogens. Clinical data provided by the FDA indicates that four patients have required hospitalization, though no fatalities have been reported to date. Public health authorities are currently conducting interviews with affected individuals to further refine the exposure timeline and distribution chain.

Shiga toxins produced during STEC infections can trigger severe bloody diarrhea and potentially fatal outcomes, such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS)—a form of kidney failure—or result in long-term complications like neurologic issues, chronic kidney disease, and high blood pressure.

The FDA initiated an inspection of the Everything Sprouts, LLC facility on August 19, 2026, to determine the root cause of the contamination. Retailers and foodservice operators who received the identified products are required to sanitize all surfaces, containers, and utensils that may have come into contact with the sprouts to prevent cross-contamination.

Salmonella infections typically present within 12 to 72 hours of ingestion, with symptoms lasting between four and seven days. Individuals with compromised immune systems, the elderly, and children under the age of five face a heightened risk of developing severe cases.

Public health surveillance remains ongoing. As the FDA and CDC continue to analyze epidemiological data, the advisory remains in effect for all consumers, restaurants, and retailers.
