Castle View beats Broomfield 1-0 in Class 5A playoff second round

Castle View beats Broomfield 1-0 in Class 5A playoff second round

November 4, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

A chaotic goal in the 23rd minute at AdventHealth Stadium propelled fourth-ranked Castle View past No. 20 Broomfield 1-0 on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

The decisive sequence originated from one of Castle View’s eight corner kicks. The ball dropped deep into the penalty box, where a clearing attempt ricocheted off goalkeeper Kieran Harrington and crossed the goal line. The stadium announcer credited the tally to David Mendez, though protesting Broomfield players immediately signaled for a handball during the scramble.

It was just a series of unfortunate bounces, Broomfield coach Zachary Hindman said of the goal. I need to look at it on film. I think a couple of the guys were saying they thought it might be a handball on their part. I don’t actually know.

The Eagles entered the matchup carrying momentum from a 4-0 opening-round victory over No. 13 Columbine. Yet, the offense stalled completely against the Sabercats defense, marking the third time this season that Broomfield failed to score. I think this year, we weren’t necessarily always the best skills-wise or weren’t the best at finishing, Harrington said. But I always knew I could trust my band of brothers. When we won, we won together. And when we lost, we lost together.

Other postseason brackets saw shifting fortunes across the region on Tuesday. No. 9 Fairview secured a 2-1 victory over No. 8 Cherry Creek behind Wetera Yota-Pelts, who netted his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Fairview advances to face top-ranked Legend on Saturday. Meanwhile, No. 3 Erie suffered its first shutout this fall, falling 1-0 to No. 19 Grand Junction despite having defeated the same opponent 2-1 in their Aug. 28 season opener. In Class 3A, top-ranked Jefferson Academy remained undefeated at 15-0-2 by dispatching No. 16 D’Evelyn 7-0, continuing a streak where all 15 of their wins this season have come by multiple goals.
