Sydney, Australia – A couple is facing fraud charges after allegedly using sophisticated technology to win AUD $1.2 million (approximately US$780,000) at the Crown sydney Casino over a two-month period in October and November. New South Wales State Police arrested the pair on Thursday following the discovery of a hidden camera.
The 36-year-old woman and her 44-year-old husband are accused of employing a miniature camera, concealed on the woman’s clothing – specifically a T-shirt featuring Mickey Mouse and Pluto – alongside a mobile phone and discreet earphones. Authorities allege the couple used the camera to monitor the card table and relay facts to each other, enabling them to place informed bets during card games.
Casino staff alerted police to the suspicious activity after noticing the camera. Following their arrest,the couple was charged with fraud the following day.
“This strong collaboration [between police and casino security], which these results reflect, is critical to ensuring that gaming is fair,” stated Detective Inspector Peter Faux.
The incident highlights the ongoing efforts to combat cheating and maintain the integrity of casino gaming. While sophisticated cheating schemes are relatively rare, casinos worldwide continually invest in security measures – including surveillance technology and trained personnel – to detect and prevent fraudulent activity. The Crown Sydney Casino has not commented specifically on the case beyond cooperating with the police inquiry.
