“Cashless Everywhere” Initiative aims to Revolutionize Healthcare Payments in India
New Delhi, India – February 2, 2024 – A critically important shift is underway in how healthcare is financed in India, with teh launch of the “Cashless Everywhere” initiative by the General Insurance Council (GIC) on January 24th, 2024. This new program promises to dramatically ease the financial burden on patients by allowing them to access cashless treatment at any hospital, irrespective of whether that facility has a pre-existing agreement with their insurer.
For years, navigating healthcare costs in India has frequently enough meant upfront payments followed by lengthy reimbursement claims – a particularly stressful situation during times of medical emergency. Previously, cashless transactions were largely limited to hospitals within an insurer’s network. Currently, approximately 63% of patients are able to utilize the cashless facility, leaving a substantial portion still facing immediate out-of-pocket expenses.
“Cashless Everywhere” aims to change that. The core principle is simple: patients should be able to opt for cashless service at any hospital, eliminating the need for a prior tie-up between the hospital and their insurance provider. The insurer will directly settle the bill with the hospital upon the patient’s discharge,as per existing arrangements.
Here’s what you need to know:
* Elective Procedures: Insurance companies must be notified at least 48 hours before scheduled admission.
* Emergency Treatment: Notification to the insurer is required within 48 hours of admission.
* Policy Compliance: All claims are, of course, subject to the terms and conditions of the individual insurance policy and the insurer’s operating guidelines.
Challenges Remain Despite Promising Start
While the initiative holds immense potential, its implementation isn’t without hurdles. Currently, “Cashless everywhere” lacks formal backing from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in the form of an official notification. this regulatory ambiguity raises concerns about hospital adoption.
Without a clear directive from the IRDAI, hospitals may be hesitant to embrace the program and could continue to request upfront payments. Experts warn that despite being available “on paper,” the benefits of “Cashless Everywhere” may not be universally accessible to policyholders across all hospitals.
What does this mean for patients?
The “Cashless Everywhere” initiative represents a significant step towards a more patient-pleasant healthcare system in India. Though, policyholders should remain proactive: ensure you understand the notification requirements for both elective and emergency procedures, and be prepared to advocate for your rights to cashless service.
