CAS orders IIHF to reinstate Russian hockey teams
The Court of Arbitration for Sport ordered the immediate reinstatement of Russian national teams across all International Ice Hockey Federation competitions, setting up an immediate clash with upcoming tournament hosts just weeks before the World Junior Championship opens in Alberta. ici.radio-canada.ca reported that the decision, rendered on a Friday morning, applies starting with the upcoming men’s under-20 showcase scheduled from December 26 to January 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer.
Court Rules IIHF Failed to Prove Russian Safety Risks
The Russian Hockey Federation brought the dispute before the court after years of exclusion following the country’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. During hearings held from October 23 to 26, the court ruled that the safety concerns raised by the IIHF and other international federations had not been sufficiently demonstrated. Germany, scheduled to host the men’s world championship in May, maintained that it would not issue visas to Russian players due to security risks. Frank Lutz, president of the German federation, stated that the judgment fundamentally alters the situation for the 2027 tournament and noted that the admission of Russia carries major political, economic, and security consequences. Adam van Koeverden, secrétaire d’État aux Sports, a clairement fait connaître la position du gouvernement canadien en disant que le Canada s’oppose fermement à la décision d’annuler l’interdiction de la Russie au hockey de l’IIHF. Hockey Canada also issued a statement declaring that the organization does not agree with the ruling.

Consequences for Ukrainian Hockey and Tournament Schedules
The ruling threatens the tournament status of Ukraine, which recently qualified for the men’s world championship for the first time since 2007, an important milestone that marked the country’s return to the global elite after nearly 20 years away. Because Ukraine secured the final spot for the 2027 event, the IIHF faces a scheduling crisis regarding how to integrate Russian teams into groups that are already established. Reports indicate that Ukrainian teams risk being pushed aside to accommodate the reinstated Russian squads, and one can easily imagine the outcry if the Ukrainians were sidelined to make room for the Russians.
