Bicyclist Killed in Suspected DUI Hit-and-Run crash in Carlsbad
CARLSBAD, CA – A bicyclist died early Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run collision on Carlsbad Boulevard, according to a press release from the City of Carlsbad. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m.on the 4400 block of Carlsbad blvd.
Authorities have arrested a suspect, identified as Alexander Gendron, 27, of Escondido, on suspicion of driving under the influence. He is expected to be booked into the Vista Detention facility.
Police say Gendron was apprehended approximately one mile from the scene of the crash.The arrest was made possible through a combination of community tips, Carlsbad’s license plate reader technology, and the deployment of a drone.
The identity of the bicyclist is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Northbound Carlsbad Boulevard between Tamarack Avenue and Cannon Road remains closed as of Saturday afternoon while the Carlsbad Police Department continues it’s inquiry. The duration of the closure is currently unspecified.
