Carlos Bolsonaro’s Photo with Bolsonaro Sparks AI Doubts Online
A photograph posted online by Carlos Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has sparked questions about its authenticity, with some social media users alleging it was created using artificial intelligence. The image, shared on Thursday, depicts the former president appearing despondent in a hospital room.
Carlos Bolsonaro accompanied the photo with a description of finding his father in a state of distress. “When I entered the room, I found that strong man ‘turned off’ in the chair, with his head down, sobbing while sleeping. I had to step back. I stayed silent for a few minutes outside, trying to compose myself, before entering again. When I returned, he was still the same. I approached, stroked his head, and he didn’t even react,” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The post quickly drew criticism and skepticism, with users pointing to inconsistencies in the image as potential evidence of AI manipulation. Concerns centered on details within the hospital bracelet visible in the photograph, including illegible text and an indication of “risk of fall,” leading some to suggest the image was artificially generated.
“If this photo wasn’t made by AI, I’m a frost-free 482L refrigerator,” one user commented. Another questioned the language displayed on the bracelet, sarcastically referring to it as “Ratanabese,” a jab at the nonsensical text often produced by AI image generators. Other users identified what they described as anomalies in the image, such as a perceived “hole” in the former president’s head, further fueling the speculation.
The controversy surrounding the photograph emerges as Jair Bolsonaro remains hospitalized in intensive care with pneumonia, according to a statement released by DF Star Hospital on March 14, 2026. His eldest son, Flávio Bolsonaro, reported his father was transferred from prison to the hospital after experiencing chills and vomiting. One of Bolsonaro’s doctors, Brasil Caiado, described the 70-year-old’s condition as serious, noting that pneumonia in patients over 70 can progress to septicemia.
Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence for attempting a coup after being convicted last year by a panel of Supreme Court justices. He was temporarily allowed out of house arrest for medical treatment. Earlier this year, on April 11, 2025, Bolsonaro was hospitalized for severe abdominal pain related to a wound sustained during a 2018 stabbing on the campaign trail. His son Carlos Bolsonaro stated at the time that his father was assessed for adhesions in his abdomen and sedated for tests.
As of Saturday, March 21, 2026, no official statement has been released addressing the allegations of AI manipulation regarding the photograph posted by Carlos Bolsonaro. The former president remains in the intensive care unit, receiving intravenous antibiotics and clinical support.
