Carmakers Shift Focus to Driver Wellness, Introducing ‘Relaxation Modes’ and Health-Focused Tech
Automobile manufacturers are increasingly prioritizing driver well-being, moving beyond conventional metrics of speed, power, and comfort to incorporate technologies designed to reduce stress and promote relaxation, according to recent observations by industry analysts and car journalists. This shift reflects a growing understanding that cars are no longer simply transportation, but “safe and relaxing personal oases,” as car journalist Egidijus Babelis put it.
“Cars were never just vehicles. If that were the case, Dacia woudl be enough on the market for an ordinary driver or Hyundai for those seeking more comfort. But car companies have always tried to offer much more: freedom, power, comfort, image, pleasure or even history,” Babelis commented. “I still think when new cars will reach a technological peak. They seem to have everything – both what they need and what we may not need, and even what we didn’t even think about. But the engineers still find what to surprise.”
Eastern manufacturers, particularly those in China, are leading the charge with features like dedicated recreation and meditation modes. These systems automatically adjust the driver’s seat to a cozy position, play calming sounds or music, and optimize climate control for a relaxing environment – all while the vehicle is parked.
Hyundai is also integrating wellness features into its lineup, offering a “relaxing driver seat” in models like the Ioniq 5, Santa Fe, and Ioniq 9. This seat extends to create a zero-gravity sensation, but is designed for use only when the car is stationary.
