Passenger Car Found Submerged in oostburg Watercourse; Authorities Seek Driver
OOSTBURG – Emergency services conducted an extensive search Tuesday afternoon after a passenger car was discovered in a watercourse along Kanaalweg 2 in Oostburg. A police helicopter also surveyed the area.
The incident began around 2:30 p.m. when an alert was issued regarding a vehicle in the water near Margarethaweg. Due to initial uncertainty about whether anyone was inside, two fire brigade diving teams and an ambulance were dispatched as a precaution.
upon arrival, responders found the car on its side, partially submerged in water, situated near a pedestrian bridge connecting two unpaved, dead-end roads, rather than at the margarethaweg as initially reported. No occupants were found in or around the vehicle. After the fire brigade successfully removed the car from the water, it was confirmed to be empty.
Fire divers conducted a thorough search of the water to ensure no one was present, but this search yielded no results.Afterward, a police helicopter, dispatched from Schiphol, arrived and conducted an aerial survey of the vicinity before returning to the Randstad area.
Police utilized a heat-imaging camera during their search, but no victims were detected. A police spokesperson stated, “we would like to speak to the one who has been in the vehicle. At least it is not about the owner, because he had lent the car.”
Authorities are currently investigating how long the car had been in the water. The police spokesperson indicated that it is not believed that anyone else is in the water, suggesting that the driver likely departed the scene.
