Capcom upgrades RE Engine into AI-generation platform via REX Project

Capcom upgrades RE Engine into AI-generation platform via REX Project

October 3, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Capcom is incrementally upgrading its proprietary RE Engine into an AI-generation development platform, aiming for a future where studios create games alongside artificial intelligence. Programmer Satoshi Ishida outlined the multi-step modernization plan, known as the REX Project, during the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026 on October 2, 2026. IGN reported that the initiative seeks to solve severe time bottlenecks caused by the massive scale of modern development pipelines.

While the publisher is revamping its core software infrastructure to accommodate automated workflows, leadership has previously drawn a hard line at generative assets. IGN noted that during a March 2026 shareholders meeting, Capcom explicitly stated it will not implement AI-generated assets into its games, focusing instead on optimization and productivity gains.

Capcom Evolves RE Engine into AI-Generation Tool

  • Capcom announced the REX Project on October 2, 2026, to evolve the RE Engine into an AI-generation game engine.
  • The publisher maintains its policy against using artificial intelligence to generate wholesale in-game art or assets.
  • The architectural overhaul standardizes the engine on a single programming language to make systems easier for both human staff and machine intelligence to use.

The REX Project Architectural Overhaul

The core driver behind the REX initiative is managing the immense production scale required for modern franchises like Resident Evil and Street Fighter. Games have grown so massive that basic, repetitive processes consume disproportionate amounts of engineering time.

Rather than rewriting a brand-new proprietary engine from scratch, the studio chose a gradual modernization path. IGN noted that Capcom is making portions of the REX system open-source specifically to aid in training machine learning models. The REX framework unifies the entire RE Engine under a single, highly common programming language. This standardization lowers the barrier for expanding development teams while simultaneously establishing a predictable syntax for automated systems to parse.

Production Efficiency Versus Asset Generation

The distinction between pipeline optimization and content generation remains a central pillar of Capcom’s public technology roadmap. IGN highlighted that company executives addressed shareholders in March 2026, affirming that artificial intelligence will serve purely as a contributing technology to streamline human workflows.

Studio representatives emphasized that generative art remains excluded from production builds across upcoming software releases. The overarching goal centers entirely on developer efficiency, letting technical teams offload tedious pipeline friction to automated tooling while human designers retain control over final creative assets.
