Canberra‘s New Lyric Theater Designs Unveiled, Drawing Inspiration from Local Landscape
CANBERRA - Detailed designs for Canberra’s new lyric theatre have been revealed, showcasing a building inspired by the region’s natural habitat and informed by extensive community consultation. The theatre, set too be built near the Canberra Theatre center, will feature a design incorporating natural forms and textures, and aims to accommodate performers, audiences, and staff effectively.
The designs were released as part of the Works Approval request lodged with the National Capital Authority. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr stated the design “reflects our landscape and celebrates First Nations’ culture.” He added that the detailed plans “respond to the needs of the people who will watch performances, the performers who will take the stage, and the staff who will work in the venue, which has been guided by extensive community consultation throughout the planning and design process.”
The theatre will be located north-west of the current Canberra Theatre Centre, bordering Northbourne Avenue and Vernon Circle, on the site of the existing Theatre Lane car park. That car park will close next month to facilitate early works, with major construction anticipated to begin early next year.
Barr also noted the new theatre will enable Canberra to host “world-class performances.”
