Canada School Shooting: 9 Dead in Tumbler Ridge

February 11, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Ten people are dead, including the suspected gunman, following shootings at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence in northeastern British Columbia on Tuesday, February 10, 2026. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) lifted an emergency alert for the community and surrounding areas late Tuesday, stating there was no longer a risk to the public.

Six people were found dead inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, according to the RCMP. A seventh victim died although being transported to a hospital. Two additional fatalities were discovered at a residence believed to be connected to the shooting. The suspected shooter was found deceased within the school, apparently as a result of a self-inflicted injury, police said.

The initial alert regarding an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School was received by authorities in the early afternoon. Upon arrival, officers discovered the six deceased individuals within the school building, in addition to the suspect. The seventh victim succumbed to their injuries en route to a medical facility.

Two individuals were airlifted to area hospitals with serious, life-threatening injuries, and an additional 25 people were assessed for non-life-threatening injuries at a local medical center, according to police.

“This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift co-operation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response,” North District Chief Supt. Ken Floyd stated. He declined to provide further details regarding the shooter.

Tumbler Ridge, a town with a population of approximately 2,400, is located about 176 kilometers northeast of Prince George. The Peace River South School District announced that both Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, which has 175 students in grades 7-12, and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School would remain closed for the remainder of the week.

The shootings have prompted expressions of grief and support from Canadian officials. Larry Brock, the shadow minister for justice and Canada’s attorney general, issued a statement saying, “My prayers are with the families, students, educators, and entire community of Tumbler Ridge as they grieve this unthinkable tragedy.”

School shootings are rare in Canada. This incident evokes the trauma of the 2020 mass shooting in Portapique, Nova Scotia, where Gabriel Wortman killed 22 people. It also recalls the 2017 Quebec mosque shooting, in which six people were killed, and the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal, where fourteen women were murdered.

The RCMP Major Crime Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shootings.
