Canada, EU and Lithuania Drop Sponsorship of Disinformation Conference

Canada, EU and Lithuania Drop Sponsorship of Disinformation Conference

October 7, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Canada, Lithuania, and the European Union’s diplomatic service have withdrawn their official sponsorship from the #Disinfo2026 counter-disinformation conference in Vilnius, Lithuania, following pressure from the Trump administration over panel sessions examining the United States as a foreign interference threat. The annual gathering, which opened on Wednesday, features discussions on foreign information manipulation and interference, drawing hundreds of researchers, journalists, and policymakers to evaluate global threats to democratic institutions.

Canada Pulls Sponsorship Over Panel Framing

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) dropped its sponsorship for the Brussels-based EU DisinfoLab event after taking issue with how specific panels were described. Samantha Lafleur, a spokesperson for GAC, stated that the government revised its participation following changes to the framing of several panel discussions, cbc.ca reported. Canadian officials were originally listed alongside Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry and the European External Action Service as supporters of the event. Signs around the conference venue in Vilnius had the government of Canada logo covered up with white stickers as proceedings began on Wednesday, according to photographs provided to CBC News. Despite the withdrawal of official sponsorship and branding, Canadian delegates remain in attendance at the conference sessions.

Pressure From U.S. State Department Targets Arctic Session

The Guardian reported that the Trump administration pressured multiple governments to abandon the conference over specific program items, focusing heavily on sessions featuring American speakers and a former CIA officer. A GAC official who was slated to chair a panel on disinformation in the Arctic scheduled for Thursday withdrew from the leadership role, according to presenter Ben Shultz with the American Sunlight Project. That panel focuses on Greenland and growing evidence that the United States has operated as a foreign information manipulation and interference actor in specific Arctic contexts. Shultz noted that while the withdrawal of three governments created a damper on the atmosphere, every scheduled speaker still showed up to address the research community.

EU and Lithuania Withdraw Support over Program Content

The European External Action Service requested the removal of its logo from all conference materials because organizers chose to frame discussions in a way that does not align with official EU positions, an EU spokesperson told CBC News. Similarly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania stated that it cancelled its participation because several parts of the program differed from official government positions. However, researchers on the ground disputed claims by sponsoring bodies that the controversial panel subjects had been recently reframed or altered. Benjamin Shultz told The Globe and Mail that descriptions for the panels in question remained unchanged from versions published as early as June 2026.

Broader Diplomatic and Legal Context Surrounding the Vilnius Event

The withdrawal coincides with concurrent geopolitical flashpoints involving North American and European diplomacy. The Globe and Mail reported that the conference featured Kimberly Prost, a Canadian jurist who was sanctioned by U.S. President Donald Trump for her work on an International Criminal Court case involving American troops in Afghanistan. While national capitals distance themselves from the event’s branding, the French government maintained its sponsorship as of writing.
