Camden Achieves Historic Crime Reduction: First Homicide-Free Summer in 50 Years
Camden, NJ – The City of Camden has reported a landmark achievement: its first homicide-free summer in at least 50 years. This unprecedented reduction in violent crime marks a important turning point for a city that, as recently as 2013, was considered one of the most hazardous municipalities in the United States.
The dramatic shift is attributed to a multifaceted approach emphasizing community engagement and proactive policing, moving beyond simply responding to calls for service. this success impacts the lives of all camden residents, fostering a safer surroundings and signaling a new era for the city’s future.
Camden County Police Deputy Chief Chris Sarlo explained that summer typically sees “the biggest time for crime,” but this year, officers focused on addressing the root causes of crime and offering resources to residents. “We’re now going the step further and seeing, ‘Hey, can we offer you some resources?'” Sarlo said.
A key component of this strategy has been deepening ties with the community through events designed to build relationships between officers and residents, particularly youth. These events have included opportunities for children to win prizes like sneakers and Amazon gift cards, alongside activities like basketball and flag football with officers.
“There’s opportunities to win brand new pair pairs of sneakers, Amazon gift cards. And then also a a chance to relate to the officers. It’s one thing to see an officer and say hello, but to play basketball with them, to play flag football with them,” sarlo said.
Markquitta Nelson, a grandmother of four, highlighted the importance of these connections. “All through the summer thay had a lot of activities for the kids to do,” Nelson said.
The Camden County Police Department has also implemented new technologies, including a recently launched drone program, to enhance responsiveness and adaptability. “We change hour to hour throughout the day, throughout the week, throughout the month. When we start to see a trend in anything, we immediately are switching gears,” Sarlo said.
Longtime Camden resident Anthony Gilliams expressed his relief and optimism. “Knowing that the crime has decreased, that’s great,” Gilliams said. “That’s awesome.”
