Cambridge University Defends Mental Health Support for Jason Arday

August 16, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Cambridge University has publicly defended its handling of mental health support for Professor Jason Arday, the sociologist who became the youngest Black person to be appointed to a professorship at the institution in 2023. The university’s statement follows reports regarding the professor’s experiences with his health and the institutional response provided by the university.

A spokesperson for the University of Cambridge stated that the institution takes the health and wellbeing of its staff and students “very seriously.” The university maintained that it provides a range of support services tailored to the needs of its community members, emphasizing that it remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment.

Professor Arday, who holds the chair in the Sociology of Education, has spoken previously about the challenges he faced during his academic career, including experiences with mental health. His appointment at Cambridge was widely noted for his path to academia, which included a diagnosis of autism and global development delay in his childhood, as well as not learning to speak until he was 11 years old.

The university’s response follows inquiries into the adequacy of the support structures available to high-profile staff members navigating significant professional transitions. While the institution did not provide specific details regarding individual personnel cases, citing privacy obligations, it asserted that its human resources and occupational health departments work to ensure that appropriate accommodations are in place for those who require them.

The university has not announced any further reviews of its internal support policies in the wake of the recent reporting. The institution’s current protocols for staff welfare remain in effect as it continues its academic operations.
