Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Launches Without Platinum Trophy on PlayStation 5, Continuing Trend That Frustrates Completionist Players
November 14, 2023 - Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 officially released today on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, but PlayStation 5 players are already voicing disappointment: teh game lacks a Platinum trophy. This marks the third consecutive mainline Call of Duty title to omit the coveted reward on Sony’s current-generation console, fueling frustration within a dedicated segment of the player base.
News of the omission surfaced prior to launch, wiht a Reddit user alerting pre-order customers: “Black Ops 7 does not have a Platinum trophy.” The user added, “If you have pre-ordered the game and are waiting for its release on Friday, be aware that this Call of Duty, like previous games, does not offer a Platinum trophy. A definite disappointment for players who want to complete everything.”
The absence of a Platinum trophy – which signifies 100% completion of a game on PlayStation – follows a similar pattern established with 2023’s Modern Warfare III. While the PlayStation 4 version of MWIII did include a Platinum trophy, it was absent from the PS5 release. Some at the time speculated this was due to MWIII being considered primarily additional content delivered through the Call of Duty HQ launcher.
Black Ops 6 continued this trend, and black Ops 7 now confirms it as a recurring practice. This decision has sparked a range of reactions from players, from resignation to outright anger. “It will have a Platinum mode within three or four years, when it will be independent of the Call of Duty launcher, like MW3 just did,” one player commented on online forums. Another suggested revisiting older versions: “Looks like we’re going to remake the PS4 version.” A third succinctly summarized the sentiment: “It’s annoying…Call of Duty was a fun Platinum game.”
For many players, earning a Platinum trophy represents a significant achievement, often requiring substantial time and skill. In demanding Call of Duty titles, mastering both the campaign and multiplayer components to unlock the trophy is seen as a testament to a player’s dedication.
The lack of this feature on PS5 is particularly noticeable given that Xbox continues to fully support 100% achievement completion across all titles, including Call of Duty.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is also available via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from day one. Though, PlayStation players are once again left with an experience lacking the completion reward many have come to expect.
