CaixaBank Prepaid Card Purchases Surpass €1 Billion in First Half of Year
The milestone highlights expanding adoption across corporate and retail segments, driven by specialized digital products and robust online spending controls.
Core Metrics of the Prepaid Portfolio
The financial institution maintains 2,8 millones de tarjetas prepago in active circulation. Operations are managed through MoneyToPay, a specialized subsidiary jointly held by Global Payments with a 51% stake and CaixaBank holding the remaining 49%, according to reporting by La Razón. The portfolio’s expansion reflects sustained quarterly growth in both issuance volume and aggregate transaction value.
Corporate Expense Management Drives Segment Expansion
Enterprise adoption served as the primary engine for the portfolio’s growth during the first half of the year. Business-focused prepaid solutions recorded a billing increase of nearly 17%, substantially outpacing a broader domestic market that remained largely stable. CaixaBank noted that more than half of all corporate prepaid card transaction volume executed across Spain utilizes its proprietary solutions. This dominance stems from targeted product innovations, including virtual corporate cards designed for supplier disbursements developed in strategic partnership with Mastercard, as reported by Europa Press.
Retail Momentum and Travel Solutions
In the retail sector, transaction volumes advanced by nearly 10% through June. Growth in this demographic relied heavily on specialized travel payment products such as the MoneyToTravel card, which offers competitive foreign exchange conditions for consumers journeying abroad. Younger demographics also contributed to the tally, with minors adopting prepaid instruments as their primary transactional medium via the digital youth platform Imagin.

The prepaid mechanism limits spending strictly to previously loaded funds, providing an alternative payment layer for specific consumer use cases. Beyond travel and youth banking, primary adoption drivers include e-commerce transactions where buyers prioritize heightened account security and strict budgetary limits.
