BYD launches Seal 5 DM-i plug-in hybrid sedan in Argentina
Chinese automaker BYD expanded its footprint in Argentina by launching the BYD Seal 5 DM-i, a plug-in hybrid sedan priced at an official list price of US$31,990 with a temporary September discount dropping the cost below US$31,000, presenting a challenge to the dominant Toyota Corolla in the local passenger vehicle market.
Automotive market dynamics are undergoing a rapid reprisal as imported plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) test the pricing power and market share of legacy internal combustion engine leaders. The arrival of the Seal 5 introduces a competitive pricing threshold in a segment where buyers traditionally have had limited electrified alternatives below that mark.
Powertrain Mechanics and Range Efficiency
The core of the Seal 5 relies on BYD’s Super Hybrid DM-i technology, which marries a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor and a 7.68 kWh Blade battery pack. The combined system outputs 178 horsepower and 210 Nm of torque, achieving a zero-to-one-hundred-kilometer-per-hour acceleration time of 8.3 seconds. According to the NEDC test cycle specifications published by the manufacturer, the vehicle delivers up to 50 kilometers of pure electric range on a single charge.

When operating with a depleted battery, the vehicle records a fuel consumption rate of 3.7 liters per 100 kilometers. Total combined driving range reaches up to 1,600 kilometers. To facilitate everyday charging operations, the vehicle package includes a portable charger alongside a home-use wall unit capable of delivering up to 7 kW of power.
Dimensions, Equipment, and Market Positioning
Measuring 4,780 millimeters in length, 1,837 millimeters in width, and 1,515 millimeters in height with a 2,718-millimeter wheelbase, the sedan provides substantial interior volume. Cargo capacity stands at 522 liters, expanding to 1,295 liters with the rear seatbacks folded down. Technological features include a 12.8-inch central multimedia display, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 15-watt wireless smartphone charging pad, and an eight-speaker audio configuration.
Safety systems comprise six airbags, a 360-degree camera array, adaptive cruise control, front collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, and lane-keeping assistance. By positioning this specification sheet at an accessible entry point, BYD aims to capture volume from buyers weighing traditional C-segment choices.
