Bus crashes Through Bridge,injuring Three in Eccles
A bus collided with a bridge over the Bridgewater Canal on Barton Lane in Eccles,Greater Manchester,resulting in serious injuries to three passengers. The incident, wich occurred on July 22, 2025, has prompted an examination into the circumstances surrounding the crash, especially given a similar accident at the same location in April 2023.
The 50-year-old bus driver was initially arrested on suspicion of reckless driving but has since been released, though he remains a suspect. The accident saw the bus apparently strike the bridge, despite height restrictions being in place. Warning signs adn chains are present at the site to prevent such occurrences.
Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud noise, likened to an explosion, immediately after the collision. One witness reported seeing two people fall from the upper deck of the bus. Responders found passengers with bleeding head wounds and one individual experiencing an epileptic seizure. The injured parties include a 19-year-old woman and two men, aged in their twenties and forties, with one in critical condition.
The incident has drawn criticism from local politicians,with Member of Parliament Michael Wheeler calling it “unacceptable” and emphasizing the need to prevent future occurrences. The management of the Bridgewater Canal is also investigating potential damage to the bridge and its infrastructure.
Transport for Greater Manchester has launched an emergency investigation. The bus involved was reportedly operating on a modified route at the time of the accident.
