Bulls face injury crisis with Handré Pollard ahead of Scarlets match

Bulls face injury crisis with Handré Pollard ahead of Scarlets match

October 26, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The Bulls are managing a significant injury crisis following their 34-26 victory over Ulster at Loftus Versfeld on October 24, 2026. Springbok flyhalf Handré Pollard, winger Cheswill Jooste, and centre Sango Xamlashe all sustained injuries during the match, leaving head coach Johan Ackermann to adjust his squad ahead of the upcoming United Rugby Championship clash against the Scarlets.

Handré Pollard hamstring assessment

Handré Pollard, who had successfully converted 13 of his 14 goal kicks over the previous two weekends, left the field in the 70th minute against Ulster due to a hamstring complaint. Bulls coach Johan Ackermann identified Handré Pollard’s hamstring injury as the most concerning among the recent casualties following the team’s bonus-point win over Ulster.

Head injuries deplete Bulls backline

The Bulls’ backline has been depleted by a series of head injuries. Cheswill Jooste, a breakout performer this season, underwent surgery for a broken cheekbone after failing a head injury assessment (HIA) during the Ulster match. Sango Xamlashe, who was stretchered off the field before the hour mark, is also unavailable for selection this week following his own concussion.

Depth chart adjustments at Loftus Versfeld

While the Bulls face immediate personnel shortages, the coaching staff is exploring internal depth to maintain their URC campaign. Curwin Bosch, Luan Giliomee, and Willie le Roux remain options to cover the flyhalf position if Pollard is ruled out. At scrumhalf, the team is already managing the absence of Embrose Papier, who is recovering from an ankle operation and is expected to be sidelined for several weeks. Paul de Wet, Zak Burger, and Keagan Johannes are tasked with rotating into the No 9 role. Canan Moodie has returned to training following his concussion, but the club confirmed he will not be considered for the Scarlets match as he continues to follow return-to-play protocols. Wing Thaakir Abrahams is nearing a return from a hamstring injury, providing a potential boost to the back three as the medical team monitors the squad’s recovery.

For athletes managing similar soft-tissue injuries or concussion recovery, professional rehabilitation requires specialized care. Players at all levels often benefit from consulting with orthopedic specialists and certified physiotherapists to ensure a safe return to competitive play and to mitigate the risk of long-term damage. Similarly, professional clubs frequently rely on specialized medical data management and injury-prevention consultants to oversee the load management of high-performance athletes during intense seasonal cycles.
