Buc‑ee’s KCK Construction Triggers Village West Parkway Road Closure

by Emma Walker – News Editor

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The highly anticipated arrival of Buc-ee’s, the Texas-based travel center known for its expansive size and unique offerings, is causing temporary traffic disruptions in the Village West area of Kansas City, Kansas. A significant road closure is planned to facilitate the construction of the 74,000-square-foot facility, slated to open in 2027 near the Kansas City Speedway and Tanger Kansas City at Legends.

The project, first announced in April 2024 with a rezoning request
,
has progressed steadily. Following site approval in November 2024,
groundbreaking occurred in October 2025
.
Now, as construction enters a critical phase, a key roadway will be impacted.

Village West Parkway Closure and Detour Information

Beginning January 26, 2026, Village West Parkway will be closed between
west of Hollywood Casino Boulevard and Speedway Boulevard. This closure is
necessary to allow crews to shift the existing roadway northward and
construct a new roundabout, a common feature at Buc-ee’s locations designed
to manage high traffic volume. The closure is expected to last through late
September 2026.

Motorists are strongly advised to follow posted detour signs and seek
option routes during this period. The Unified government of Wyandotte
County and the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department have been notified of
the traffic changes and will assist with traffic management.

Understanding the Roadwork and its Impact

The roundabout is a crucial component of the infrastructure improvements
required to support the Buc-ee’s travel center. Roundabouts are known for
improving traffic flow and reducing the severity of accidents compared to
customary intersections. Shifting the roadway is necessary to accommodate
the footprint of the new roundabout and ensure safe access to the Buc-ee’s
property.

The closure will undoubtedly impact traffic to the Kansas Speedway, Tanger
Outlets, and Hollywood Casino, particularly during events. Planning extra
travel time and utilizing alternative routes will be essential for those
traveling to these destinations.

Buc-ee’s: A Regional Draw

Buc-ee’s has cultivated a devoted following due to its clean restrooms,
wide selection of snacks, Texas-themed merchandise, and ample parking. The
travel center is expected to be a significant economic driver for the
region, attracting visitors from across the midwest.

“We understand the importance of Village West Parkway to the community,
especially given its proximity to the Kansas Speedway and the excitement
surrounding Buc-ee’s,” said Buc-ee’s representative Jeff Nadalo. “We’re
working closely with the Unified Government and Cleveland Construction to
ensure the road reopens quickly.”

what to Expect During Construction

Beyond the road closure, residents and visitors can anticipate increased
construction traffic in the area. Noise levels may also be elevated during
certain hours. The Unified Government will provide updates on the project’s
progress through its website and social media channels.

Looking Ahead

While the temporary inconvenience of the road closure is unavoidable, the
long-term benefits of the Buc-ee’s travel center – including increased
economic activity and enhanced travel amenities – are expected to outweigh
the short-term disruption. The completion of the roundabout and the opening
of Buc-ee’s in 2027 will mark a significant milestone for the Village West
area and the Kansas City metropolitan region.
