In a poignant tribute too the recently departed heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne, Double Fine Productions has made its acclaimed video game Brütal Legend available for free, but only for a fleeting 666 minutes.

the news comes in the wake of osbourne’s passing at the age of 76. The legendary frontman of Black Sabbath, who recently concluded his farewell concert tour, lent his voice and likeness to the character The Guardian of Metal in Brütal Legend. The character was meticulously designed to mirror Osbourne’s distinctive appearance and persona.

Double fine, now owned by Microsoft, announced the special promotion via social media, stating, “But this incredible deal will only last for 666 minutes, as the prophecy foretold. So get yourself clicking, before it disappears like a demon in the night…” The game is being offered for free on the Itch.io platform.

Released in 2009, Brütal Legend is a unique blend of action-adventure and real-time strategy, steeped in heavy metal culture. The game stars Jack black as Eddie Riggs,a roadie thrust into a fantastical world inspired by heavy metal mythology. The game’s journey to release was complex, with EA eventually publishing it after Activision initially dropped the title, leading to a legal dispute between Double Fine and Activision.

Beyond Osbourne, the game featured a star-studded cast of metal luminaries, including Lemmy Kilmister, rob Halford, and Lita Ford. Double Fine founder Tim Schafer curated an extensive soundtrack, selecting over 100 metal tracks to immerse players in the game’s world.

The limited-time offer commenced at 4pm PT on july 23rd, meaning it will conclude at 3am PT on Thursday, July 24th. Double Fine is currently developing its next project, keeper, for PC and Xbox.
