Brussels Shootings: No Injuries Reported, Suspects at Large

Shots were fired Saturday evening on the Anderlechtsesteenweg in Brussels, prompting a police investigation. No injuries were reported, and the perpetrators remain at large, according to police zone Brussel-Hoofdstad Elsene.

The incident occurred around 6:00 PM local time on the Anderlechtsesteenweg, a street running from the Fontainasplein to the Slachthuislaan. The area, between the Anderlechtsepoort and the Camuselstraat, was temporarily closed in both directions while authorities investigated, according to reports.

The Anderlechtsesteenweg has a long history as a key route into Brussels, dating back to the medieval period. Originally part of the path from France and Henegouwen, it connected to the Bergensesteenweg and led through the Fontainasplein, Kolenmarkt, and Guldenhoofdstraat to the Grote Markt. Sections of the street were historically known as ‘Overmolen’ and ‘ter Cruyskene,’ referencing former city gates. The current name, Anderlechtsesteenweg, has been in use since the 16th century.

While once a popular area for cafes, the Anderlechtsesteenweg is now primarily residential. The street’s importance as a major thoroughfare diminished in the 19th century with the development of new north-south routes.

Police have not released any information regarding the motive for the shooting or the number of individuals involved. The investigation is ongoing.
