British Tourists Arrested in Spain for Staged Kidnapping & Fraud

February 27, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Spanish police have arrested two British tourists in Benidorm after uncovering what authorities allege was a fabricated kidnapping plot designed to extort money from a family member. The men, aged 51 and 37, reportedly demanded a ransom of £725 – approximately $915 or €845 – from a relative of one of the suspects.

The investigation was triggered when UK authorities alerted Interpol to a potential kidnapping involving a British citizen vacationing in the coastal resort town. According to police reports, the family member received video messages appearing to indicate the alleged victim covered in blood, while another individual threatened him with a knife.

The reports prompted a significant response from Spanish law enforcement, diverting resources from other ongoing investigations. A specialized unit based in Madrid, typically handling kidnapping and extortion cases, was also deployed to assist local Alicante police.

Investigators were initially led to believe a genuine kidnapping was underway, with communications from British authorities indicating the suspects threatened to kill the “victim” if the £725 ransom wasn’t paid into a designated bank account. The search ultimately focused on a hotel where the two men were staying.

However, surveillance teams observed the supposed hostage calmly leaving the hotel building alongside the individual identified as his captor, immediately raising suspicions. A subsequent investigation revealed the entire incident was staged in an attempt to obtain “easy money,” according to police statements.

Both men were arrested on suspicion of faking a crime and fraud. During processing at the police station, it was discovered that the alleged kidnapper had provided a false name both during hotel check-in and when identifying himself to officers, leading to an additional charge of identity fraud.

If convicted, the two British nationals could face imprisonment, fines, and be held liable for the costs associated with the extensive police operation launched in response to the false kidnapping claim. Travel options between Benidorm and Madrid, where the specialized unit is based, include train, bus, and rideshare, with costs starting around €9, according to travel booking services.
