British Royal Family Attends Festival of Remembrance at Royal Albert Hall
King Charles III and Queen Camilla joined Kate Middleton and Prince William at London’s Royal Albert Hall for the Festival of Remembrance, marking the return of Prince William to the solemn national event after missing the 2025 ceremony due to international travel.
Festival of Remembrance Honors Fallen Military Personnel
Organized by the Royal British Legion, the Festival of Remembrance pays tribute to military personnel who lost their lives in service. This year’s ceremony centered on missions in Bosnia and Iraq alongside the 35th anniversary of the conclusion of the Gulf War. The program featured accounts from three veterans honoring the 47 British service members who died in that conflict. The tribute also highlighted participants in Operation TELIC in Iraq, utilizing letters sent home to chronicle the separation from their families.

Clive Myrie hosted the evening, which interleaved musical performances by Alfie Boe, James Emmanuel, Mica Paris, Rita Wilson, and Tom Odell with personal testimonials. The Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment and the Royal Marines bands from Portsmouth and Collingwood provided musical accompaniment throughout the program. The evening concluded with two minutes of silence as poppy petals fell, followed by the national anthem.
Royal Attendance and Return of the Heir
Prince William joined Kate Middleton in the royal box after missing the 2025 gathering while returning from Brazil following the Earthshot Prize awards and the COP30 climate summit. The Princess attended that gathering alongside George, who attended the event for the first time. King Charles and Queen Camilla presided over the evening alongside Princess Anne, the Duchess of Edinburgh, and the Dukes of Gloucester. The Duchess of Edinburgh previously inaugurated the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey on behalf of the sovereign, visiting a space featuring 234 plots and approximately 10,000 commemorative symbols.
The men wore dark suits bearing decorations, while the women dressed in sober tones. All of them wore traditional red poppies. Queen Elizabeth II attended the gathering for decades before being absent in 2021 on medical advice as she reduced her public engagements.
The National Ceremony at Whitehall
The weekend of remembrance continues at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, where King Charles leads the national service. Queen Camilla, other members of the royal family, the prime minister, representatives of the Armed Forces, and delegations from the Commonwealth join the monarch for two minutes of silence at eleven in the morning, followed by wreath-laying. The Royal British Legion organizes a subsequent parade featuring 10,000 veterans marching past the monument.
