British Couple Freed From Taliban Custody After Months of Detention
Kabul, Afghanistan – A British couple held by the Taliban for months have been released and returned to the United Kingdom, in a development described by the wife as a moment of divine intervention. Peter and Barbie, whose identities have not been fully publicized, arrived back on British soil last night following thier release facilitated by Qatar. An emotional reunion with one of their children occurred instantly upon their arrival in Doha on Friday.
The couple’s release comes after escalating concerns over their deteriorating health, with United Nations human rights experts warning in July that they faced “irreparable damage or even death” without adequate medical care. Their children had repeatedly appealed for their freedom, highlighting the urgent need for intervention. The taliban had detained the couple, with the reasons for their initial capture remaining largely unclear.
Upon arriving at Kabul airport, Barbie expressed her relief, stating, ”God is good, as they say in Afghanistan.” The couple had been facing increasingly dire circumstances, with experts noting a lack of access to necessary medical attention.
Looking ahead, Peter and Barbie will forgo an immediate return to Afghanistan, prioritizing attendance at their granddaughter’s wedding next month. They also expressed simple desires for familiar comforts, with Barbie craving salad and marmite, and Peter anticipating white beans in tomato sauce – a welcome change after months with limited “fat and salt.”
