Tom Noonan, a prolific actor known for his chilling portrayals of villains and his significant contributions to New York’s theater scene, died on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at the age of 74. The news was confirmed by director Fred Dekker, who worked with Noonan on the 1987 film The Monster Squad.
Noonan first gained widespread recognition for his role as Francis Dollarhyde, a serial killer in Michael Mann’s 1986 thriller Manhunter. The performance, described as “chilling and unforgettable,” established his reputation for portraying deeply disturbing characters. Mann reportedly asked Noonan how he was able to be so scary, to which Noonan simply shrugged, according to accounts of the production. The film, based on Thomas Harris’s novel Red Dragon, starred William Petersen and Dennis Farina alongside Noonan.
Born April 12, 1951, in Greenwich, Connecticut, Noonan’s career spanned both stage and screen. Beyond his function in films like Manhunter and Heat, he was a dedicated playwright and actor who founded The Paradise Factory, a theater in Manhattan’s East Village. Originally established as the Paradise Theatre in 1983, shortly after his graduation from Yale University, the company became a venue for his own plays and a platform for emerging talent. He also taught acting at the theatre.
While often cast as antagonists, Noonan’s range extended to smaller, more eccentric roles. He appeared in Jim Jarmusch’s Mystery Train (1989), playing a character who claimed to have seen the ghost of Elvis. He also took on roles in numerous television crime procedurals, including CSI and Law & Order.
Dekker recalled Noonan’s dedication to his craft, even amidst the challenges of a demanding role. He described Noonan’s experience with the elaborate makeup required for his role as Frankenstein’s monster in The Monster Squad, noting that the actor sometimes found it “arduous and annoying” and would even drive home still in costume. Dekker stated, “Tom’s indelible performance as Frankenstein in The Monster Squad is a highlight of my modest filmography.”
No cause of death has been immediately released.
