Sergeant Involved in Fatal Shooting at Festa Junina in Minas Gerais
A Brazilian Army sergeant, identified as 3rd Sergeant Rafael de Souza Vieira, fatally shot a colleague during a Festa Junina celebration in teh municipality of Passa Tempo, Minas Gerais, on Sunday, august 11th, 2024. Vieira was subsequently shot and killed by a police officer responding to the incident.
The shooting occurred at approximately 8:30 PM local time at a festa Junina event held in the central plaza of Passa Tempo, a town located approximately 160 kilometers south of Belo Horizonte. Initial reports indicate the shooting stemmed from a dispute over a woman, with jealousy cited as the primary motive.
According to the Minas Gerais Military Police, Sergeant Vieira shot and killed another individual, later identified as Peter Douglas de Oliveira, 28, a civilian employee of the Brazilian Army. A responding police officer than engaged and fatally shot Vieira.
The scene was secured by the military Police, and forensic investigators collected evidence. The room where the initial shooting took place showed significant evidence of the violence, with bloodstains on the walls. A firearm, believed to be the weapon used by Sergeant vieira, was recovered near Oliveira’s body.
Separate Incident: Mourning for Gabrielly Simões Silva
In an unrelated incident, 21-year-old Gabrielly Simões Silva passed away on Monday, August 12th, 2024, and her funeral was held at the Santa Casa de Santos funeral home. She was buried at 12:00 PM on the same day.
Family and friends have expressed their grief on social media, with Gabrielly’s aunt posting a message calling for an end to violence and expressing the family’s devastation.
