Brazil Launches Dengue Vaccination for Healthcare Workers

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Brazilian health officials this week launched a nationwide dengue vaccination campaign targeting frontline healthcare workers, aiming to protect 1.2 million professionals within the country’s public health system, the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). Approximately 650,000 initial doses have already been distributed to states, with further shipments expected in the coming days, according to reports from Outbreak News Today.

The rollout centers on a domestically produced dengue vaccine developed by the Butantan Institute, a key milestone for Brazilian scientific autonomy and public health preparedness. The vaccine is a tetravalent formulation requiring a single dose, representing a significant advancement in the country’s capacity to combat the mosquito-borne disease.

The initial phase of the vaccination program prioritizes healthcare personnel directly involved in patient care and preventative measures. This includes physicians, nurses, nursing assistants, dentists, multidisciplinary teams, community health agents, and those engaged in endemic disease control. Personnel in supporting roles within primary care units – receptionists, security staff, cleaning crews, ambulance workers, and kitchen staff – are also included in this first stage.

The Ministry of Health plans to extend the vaccination program to broader segments of the population, specifically individuals aged 15 to 59, beginning in the second half of 2026. This expansion is contingent upon increased production capacity at the Butantan Institute, ensuring sufficient vaccine supply to meet the wider demand.

The Ministério da Saúde, led by Minister Alexandre Padilha since March 2025, oversees the SUS, which is described as the world’s largest integrated public health system. The ministry has recently highlighted initiatives such as the “Agora Tem Especialistas” program, providing specialized care through mobile units, and investments in vaccine production through the Novo PAC Saúde program. The government also recently announced an investment of 1.4 billion Brazilian reais in the Butantan Institute to expand its manufacturing capabilities.

The launch of the dengue vaccination campaign follows a recent visit by President Lula and Minister Padilha to a new Aché pharmaceutical factory in Pernambuco, which will produce 40 million doses of medication. The Ministry of Health also announced a plan of action and over 131 million Brazilian reais for the state of Espírito Santo related to the Novo Rio Doce agreement.
