Fifteen people were killed and multiple others injured when a passenger bus crashed in northeastern Brazil on Saturday, authorities reported.
The bus, traveling from the state of Bahia, overturned after colliding with a sand embankment in Saloa, Pernambuco state. According to police, the vehicle initially veered into oncoming traffic, struck roadside rocks, and then careened off the road, resulting in the fatal rollover. This tragedy underscores the ongoing challenges of road safety in Brazil, where bus accidents, often linked to driver fatigue, poor road conditions, or mechanical failures, remain a significant concern.
Approximately 30 passengers were on board at the time of the incident. While the exact number of injuries is still being determined, injured individuals have been transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The bus driver sustained minor injuries and, authorities confirmed, tested negative for alcohol.
Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash. bahia Governor jeronimo Teixeira stated via social media that his administration is providing support for rescue operations and victim identification efforts. Further updates will be provided as the examination progresses.
