Boxing a Humanoid Robot at CES: My Fight with Unitree G-1

A Human Takes on a Robot in the Ring: lessons from CES 2026

When the inevitable robot uprising comes,I’ll be ready, thanks to some valuable lessons I picked up at CES. First, if given the choice of a dance off versus hand-to-hand combat, opt for the fight.Second, wear a cup when you do.

The Rise of Humanoid robots and unitree’s G-1

robotics company Unitree showcased its G-1 humanoid robot at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2026.The G-1 is notable as a relatively affordable humanoid robot, already available for under $15,000. CES 2026 was dominated by advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics, and Unitree’s booth quickly became a focal point. The robot, dressed in a surprisingly dapper white shirt and button-down vest, captivated onlookers with its extraordinary dance skills, performing moves that would earn respect from even legendary dancers like Shabba-Doo and Bugaloo Shrimp.

However, there was another G-1 present – one with a very different purpose.

An Unexpected Boxing Match

By chance, I was offered the possibility to step into the ring and spar with the G-1. Having spent the previous week immersed in the latest robotic technology, the constant exposure to these advancements made me eager to test my mettle against a machine. The prospect of “whaling on a robot” was simply too tempting to pass up.

A Clearly Unfair Fight?

The fight felt rigged from the start. The G-1 was equipped with headgear, a protective measure conspicuously absent for myself and other human participants. While the robot sported professional cherry-red Everlast gloves, I was given a pair of salmon-colored alternatives secured with velcro. This disparity in equipment instantly suggested an uneven playing field.

Advantages and Disadvantages in the Ring

As the round began, it became clear that the robot possessed superior strength and stamina. However, I had a reach advantage, and a basic understanding of boxing strategy. My plan was to utilize a combination of jabs and uppercuts, focusing on maintaining distance.

What I hadn’t anticipated was the outcome of my height advantage. The robot’s swings consistently targeted the lower abdomen – a painful and unexpected reality.

The Future of Human-Robot Interaction

This experience, while somewhat comical, highlights the rapidly evolving landscape of human-robot interaction. As robots become more refined and integrated into our lives, understanding thier capabilities and limitations – and perhaps investing in protective gear – will become increasingly significant. The G-1’s appearance at CES 2026 isn’t just a exhibition of technological prowess; it’s a glimpse into a future where humans and robots will increasingly share physical spaces, and occasionally, even a boxing ring.
