Boucheron’s Claire Choisne: Liberty & High Jewelry Collection

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Boucheron has donated the “Faisceaux” brooch to the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, a piece emblematic of the creative direction of Claire Choisne, who has led the high jewelry house since 2011.

The brooch, a complex and sculptural work, exemplifies Choisne’s approach to design, which prioritizes conceptual expression over reliance on precious materials. According to Choisne, her collections are driven by the idea she wishes to convey, with metals and gemstones serving to enhance the underlying concept. This methodology diverges from many jewelry designers who start with the stones themselves.

Choisne views her role at Boucheron as part of a continuing legacy initiated by the maison’s founder, Frédéric Boucheron. “I want to push the techniques forward, push the vision,” she stated, emphasizing a commitment to innovation and advancement within the high jewelry sector. “Our individual time at the helm is small compared to the age of the maison, and I want to run swift doing my part.”

Recent inspiration for Choisne’s work has reach from the California coastline and natural landscapes. A summer spent traveling through California, including Highway 1 through Considerable Sur and Carmel by the Sea, and Sequoia National Park, provided a wealth of observations documented through photographs and personal reflection. She noted a particular fascination with pelicans, observing and cataloging them for potential future collections.

At Boucheron, Choisne operates alongside Hélène Poulit-Duquesne, the CEO, forming a female leadership duo focused on breaking new ground in high jewelry, mirroring the innovative spirit of Frédéric Boucheron. Choisne is known for her audacious and surprising designs, consistently seeking innovative methods and materials beyond traditional precious stones.

The donation of “Faisceaux” to the V&A marks a significant addition to the museum’s collection and underscores Boucheron’s commitment to preserving its artistic heritage. The maison recently celebrated the opening of its first Los Angeles boutique in October 2024.
