Boston Dynamics stresses safety measures for physical AI liability

September 30, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The Shifting Risks of Physical AI

As autonomous systems transition into industrial and daily workflows, the traditional boundaries of liability are rewriting themselves. Future insurance frameworks must position risk managers as proactive shields across a customer's entire lifespan.

This technological shift was demonstrated on-site with Boston Dynamics’ SpotArm interacting with physical objects. Jason Fiorillo, Chief Legal Officer at Boston Dynamics—an entity where Hyundai Motor Group is a major shareholder—stressed that human-robot collaboration environments require safety measures to handle unexpected outcomes. While deploying robots to shoulder dangerous labor reduces corporate risk, it simultaneously shifts liability into software and hardware domains that require specialized coverage models.

Rethinking Underwriting and Value Chains

Physical AI integration requires structural adjustments across the entire insurance value chain. According to Jason Fiorillo, insurers must embrace data-driven partnerships utilizing robot data to accurately price and manage these emerging risks. Insurers can no longer view automation merely as an internal efficiency tool for processing claims.

Microsoft Financial Services Advisor Dorota Zimnoch reinforced this perspective during her presentation at the Seoul event. Drawing on her background with global carriers including AIG and MetLife, Zimnoch emphasized that agentic AI serves as a critical catalyst for moving insurers away from being just “payers” and toward active partnerships. Sustaining this transition requires intelligent data governance to establish trust with customers.

Strategic Transformation for Modern Carriers

To remain competitive in an automated economy, insurance providers must restructure operations across four distinct pillars: customer relationships, risk management, revenue models, and product architecture. Integrating agentic AI into underwriting, marketing, and claims processing can streamline efficiency while upgrading the end-user experience.
