Borderlands 4 Launch on Nintendo Switch 2 Indefinitely Delayed, Pre-Orders Refunded
September 23, 2025 - The release of Borderlands 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2 has been delayed indefinitely, Gearbox Software announced Tuesday evening.Digital pre-orders on the Nintendo eShop have been canceled and refunds will begin processing on September 26, in accordance with Nintendo policy.
The delay comes as the game faces performance issues across multiple platforms, including PC and other consoles. Gearbox stated they “do not take this decision lightly,” but are “committed to ensuring we deliver the best possible experience to our fans, and the game needs additional growth and polish time to do that.” The studio hopes to align the Switch 2 release with the implementation of cross-saves for all versions of the game, but has not provided a timeframe for either feature.
Borderlands 4, the latest installment in the popular looter-shooter franchise, launched earlier this month to a mixed reception. Reports have surfaced detailing performance concerns, including a memory leak that causes the game to run progressively worse during extended play sessions. While initial impressions suggested the game ran adequately on Switch 2, capped at 30fps, experiences on the Steam Deck have been described as subpar. Digital Foundry’s analysis also indicated performance issues across various platforms.
Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has been actively engaging on social media as the game’s launch, but has not yet commented on the Switch 2 delay as of this publication.
