Body of 11-year-old footballer Dre Cooper recovered from Broken River
A Community Mourns After Tragic River Recovery
The body of 11-year-old Dre Cooper was recovered from the Broken River near Shepparton on Tuesday after the boy failed to return from the water. He had been missing since approximately 2.45pm on Monday. The location of the incident is roughly 180 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. An investigation is now under way into his death, however it is not being treated as suspicious.
A Rising Star on the Field
Dre was a dedicated junior footballer for the Rumbalara Football Netball Club, where he had played 26 games. Having debuted in the under-14s squad at age 10, he went on to become a premiership player in the club’s first-ever Under 12s season. In a public statement, the club remembered him as a talented athlete with a “caring heart” who left a lasting impression on his teammates. The club noted he possessed “a little cheekiness” and was a standout on the field whose “talent, determination, and love for his teammates and the game of football shone through whenever he played.”
“He brought so much to our club simply by being himself,” the club said. To honor his memory and offer support to his family, the club has scheduled a vigil for Friday.
Community Rallies in Support
A GoFundMe campaign launched to assist the family has raised more than $40,000. Organizer Dwayne Mansfield explained that while the family had not asked for financial help, the effort offered an opportunity for the community to rally around them. “There are times in life when words simply aren’t enough, and when a family is going through a difficult time, knowing that people care, are thinking of them and are standing beside them can mean more than words could ever express,” Mansfield said. He added, “Let’s show them that they have a community behind them, people who care deeply and who want to help in whatever way they can.”
Cultural Ties to the Broken River
Yorta artist Neil Morris, known as DRMNGNOW, shared a tribute highlighting the deep cultural significance of the river to the local community. Identifying the boy as the son of his cousin, Greg, Morris reflected on the shared history of the waterway. He described the news as “absolutely devastating.”
“These are waters where we have all swum, fished, grew from kids to youth, to adults, holding these waters deep in journey, a part of us,” Morris wrote on Instagram. He concluded his tribute with, “May the yenbena be cloaking you in so much love neph. So so much love.”
Next Steps for Investigators
An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is currently underway.
