Las Vegas High School Mascot Dusty the Diamondback Named America’s Best
Dusty the Diamondback, the mascot for Desert Oasis High School in Las Vegas, has been crowned the best high school mascot in America. The title follows a bracket-style national competition hosted by the online voting platform The64, with the final round of voting concluding on November 1, 2026, according to FOX5.
A Competitive Path to the National Title
Desert Oasis High School entered the tournament as the sole representative for Nevada. The competition required schools to complete multiple rounds of public voting against institutions from across the country. In the championship match, Dusty the Diamondback defeated Strut the Fighting Gobbler, the mascot for Broadway High School in Rockingham County, Virginia.

The victory marks a transition in the national rankings, as Dusty takes the title from the previous champion, Karl the Cobbler of Central High School in Rapid City, South Dakota. As a reward for the win, Desert Oasis High School is set to receive a $2,000 credit toward school spirit wear from The Mascot Shop.
Students and Alumni Drive Campaign Through Social Media
The campaign for the title relied heavily on digital outreach and local community participation. Students, staff, and alumni used social media platforms like TikTok to generate support throughout the bracket stages. FOX5 reported that the effort transformed from a casual competition into a coordinated campus-wide movement.
Brooklyn Welsh, the student body president at Desert Oasis, noted that the initial reaction among students was one of uncertainty regarding the nature of the contest. However, the movement gained momentum as the school advanced through the rounds. “At first no one really knew what was happening,” Welsh said. “We posted every other day. We made videos, TikToks. We rallied people—parents, the community. We went to middle schools.”
“It’s the coolest thing in the world because it shows how much morale our school has already. I think we need to strive for this every year now,” Welsh said.
The Logistics of the Victory
The recognition was formalized with a campus parade at Desert Oasis, featuring a drumline and a public appearance by the mascot. Justin Woo, the founder of The64, stated that the win was a direct result of the intensity of the school’s digital campaign and the level of city-wide engagement.

While the mascot award focuses on school spirit, the overall situation in Las Vegas news remains varied. The community also mourned the death of Carmine Vento, a local figure who introduced pizza by the slice to the region in 1976. Governor-elect Aaron Ford recently addressed supporters following the conclusion of the general election cycle as the region manages transitions in local governance.
Future Aspirations for School Leadership
As the academic year continues, Welsh said the school should strive for the title every year, adding that the council is only going to get better and that morale at the school will only improve, with next year’s new student body president expected to do bigger and better things.
