Body Found at Columbus Park
Mayor Matt Mahan confirmed that a body was discovered during the clearing of the Columbus Park encampment [[1]]. The cause of death is under inquiry [[1]]. Approximately half of unhoused deaths in the city are linked to addiction [[1]]. Columbus Park was the city’s largest encampment and a refuge for unhoused LGBTQ+ individuals [[1]].
Resident Concerns
Residents expressed concerns about where they will go as the encampment is cleared, as much of the promised housing is not yet available [[1]]. One resident, Carlos, stated he has been on a housing waitlist for a decade and currently has nowhere else to go [[1]].The New Haven Inn, a shelter run by LifeMoves, has a waitlist of 30 people and requires residents to be actively working towards a housing plan [[1]]. Accessing the waitlist requires a phone number, which many experiencing homelessness do not have [[1]].
