Bob Dylan Adds Jimmie Vaughan to Band for US Tour Finale
Bob Dylan wrapped up the US leg of his 2026 tour at the Ascend Federal Credit Union Amphitheater in Nashville, Tennessee on August 1 by adding new guitarist Jimmie Vaughan to the live band, punctuating a tumultuous summer of unexpected departures on the road.
The Backstage Turnover Behind the Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour
The addition of Vaughan arrives after months of unexpected departures within the touring lineup for Dylan’s ongoing Rough And Rowdy Ways tour. In June, long-serving guitarist Doug Lancio stepped back from touring duties following a performance at the Santa Barbara Bowl, bringing an end to a tenure that began in 2021. According to a spokesperson for Dylan, the camp had “no word” on whether jazz guitarist Julian Lange—who seemingly stepped in to fill the vacancy—would remain a permanent fixture in the ensemble, per initial reports.
Compounding the instability, acoustic guitarist Bob Britt exited the live band roughly two weeks after Lancio’s departure. Britt had toured with the artist since 2019. Screenshots circulated by fans online captured a deleted social media post in which Britt wrote “Sayonara Bobby” alongside an image depicting a flight route from Austin, Texas to Nashville during an off-day, adding the comment: “I quit.”
Britt later clarified the circumstances of his exit via Facebook, confirming that he was “not fired” by Dylan. “Apparently there are quite a few threads out there with people speculating about my departure from the Bob tour. I’d like to clear it up,” he wrote. “I was not fired but left of my own accord for reasons I would prefer to keep private. I will miss my band mates and crew.”
Filling the Gaps with Blues and Jazz Heavyweights
Because Julian Lange faced prior touring commitments that prevented him from playing every live date, the camp brought in additional firepower. Rolling Stone highlighted that jazz and blues guitarist Joel Paterson joined the live group on June 29, while R&B guitarist Jad Tariq stepped in for dates that Lange could not manage.
This revolving door of talent culminated in Nashville on August 1. Five songs into the set, Jimmie Vaughan emerged to join Dylan and the band on the Rough and Rowdy Ways track “False Prophet,” staying on stage to cover Bo Diddley’s 1961 deep cut “I Can Tell.” Following an eight-song absence from the stage, Vaughan returned toward the end of the set to perform another album track, “Goodbye Jimmy Reed,” as documented in setlists shared online by Still On The Road.
Vaughan, the brother of late music icon Stevie Ray Vaughan, shares a deep history with Dylan. He first collaborated with the singer-songwriter during the 1990 sessions for Under The Red Sky, contributing guitar work to tracks like “Handy Dandy,” and later joining forces with his brother on recordings for “God Knows,” “Cat’s In The Well,” and “10,000 Men.” Vaughan also previously appeared alongside Dylan for a nine-song live collaboration in Austin, Texas in April 2024.
Uncertainty Ahead of the European Trek
As the US tour concludes, uncertainty surrounds which musicians will accompany Dylan for the upcoming UK and European leg of the Rough And Rowdy Ways tour, which launches in Norway in October. Julian Lange is scheduled to perform additional US dates during that timeframe, making his participation in the European shows highly unlikely.
The UK itinerary is slated to begin in Bournemouth on November 25, with stops in Birmingham, Sheffield, and Blackpool before a five-night residency at London’s Royal Festival Hall from December 3 to 8. These London dates will mark Dylan’s first appearances in the capital since his three-night run at the Royal Albert Hall in 2024, continuing a tour cycle that has seen the artist occasionally dust off rare catalog staples, such as his performance of “I Shall Be Released” in Eugene, Oregon—his first time playing the song in 18 years—and a rare airing of “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” near Seattle.
