Blue Whale-Sized Asteroid 2026 JH2 Makes Close Approach to Earth
A newly identified asteroid, designated 2026 JH2, passed in proximity to Earth earlier this week. The celestial object, described as comparable in size to a blue whale, was monitored by astronomers as it completed its trajectory through the inner solar system.
The asteroid’s path brought it toward Earth on May 18, with the approach continuing into May 19. According to observational data, the object was of sufficient size and proximity to be detectable via telescope, allowing researchers to track its movement as it neared the planet.
While the proximity of 2026 JH2 attracted attention due to its classification as a near-Earth object, it remained a subject of standard astronomical observation. The tracking of such objects is part of ongoing efforts to map the orbits of bodies that share space near Earth’s orbital path.
The asteroid is currently moving away from the immediate vicinity of the planet, and its trajectory is being monitored by international tracking networks to refine its orbital calculations for future cycles.
