snapchat Launches Bitmoji Plaza, a 3D Avatar Space on the Web
Snapchat is testing a new web-based surroundings called Bitmoji Plaza, allowing users too interact with their Bitmoji avatars in a shared 3D space. The feature, currently rolling out gradually, marks Snapchat’s first foray into a persistent virtual world, though the company clarifies it’s not intended to be a full-fledged metaverse.
Bitmoji Plaza enables users to see and interact with their friends’ Bitmojis – avatars can move, dance, and wave to each other – within a minimalist 3D environment accessible through the web. Users can opt-in to join the Plaza via web settings.
Snapchat currently boasts an estimated 2.7 billion active Bitmoji avatars. While the company primarily focuses on its mobile app, this expansion aims to extend Bitmoji engagement beyond the app itself. Social Media Today describes Bitmoji Plaza as similar to Roblox, but currently lacking the games and expanded engagement opportunities found on that platform.
In a separate update, Snapchat is also expanding Bitmoji sticker access, bringing its sticker library to iMessage via a new Snapchat Keyboard for iOS and android. Users will be able to select “Snapchat” as a sticker source within other messaging applications, utilizing customized Bitmoji stickers in chats with friends.
Snapchat announced these updates in recent newsroom posts, as reported by Social media Today. The launch of Bitmoji Plaza and expanded sticker access comes as Snapchat prepares to introduce fees for storing old photos and videos, a move that has drawn criticism from users.
