Jakarta, indonesia – Birth control pills aren’t solely for preventing pregnancy or for women who are married or have children; they can also be a viable option for managing menstrual pain, according to an Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist.
Dr. Olivia Oktaviani emphasized that unmarried women can be prescribed birth control pills in specific circumstances. “Even in unmarried women we can give [birth control pills].Back again, what kind of condition, what kind of case. Are there menstrual problems, pain, or there are other problems, we can give it,” Dr. Oktaviani stated during a media meeting in Jakarta on Saturday, October 4, 2025.
However, Dr.Oktaviani stressed the importance of a thorough medical consultation before prescribing birth control pills, even for those experiencing menstrual discomfort. She explained that doctors typically recommend lifestyle changes – such as a healthier diet and stress reduction - as a first step. She noted that she frequently sees adolescent patients experiencing menstrual pain, requiring evaluation to determine the underlying cause, which can range from weight issues to stress and poor diet.
“Evaluation of lifestyle first three months,if the menstrual pattern improves, then it is enough to change the pattern of life (without birth control pills),” she said.
Dr. Oktaviani also addressed common misconceptions about birth control pills, stating they are safe, effective in preventing pregnancy up to 93 percent, and do not cause kidney problems. She specifically debunked the myth that birth control pills can cause a “dry uterus.” “There is a myth, consumption of pills later the uterus is dry. That’s the myth that until this moment I still hear in the practice room,so many do not want to use birth control pills because of that. Actually there is no birth control pill to make the uterus dry, it’s a myth that is very, very myth,” she explained.
