Indonesian Content Creator Honored with Asteroid Named After Him
JAKARTA, Indonesia – Bima Nasution, an Indonesian astronomy content creator, has been recognized for his significant contributions too popularizing science with the naming of asteroid 12937 Premadi in his honor.The recognition acknowledges his efforts in making astronomy accessible to a global audience, notably through engaging digital content.
Nasution’s work extends Indonesia’s legacy in astronomy, dating back to the establishment of the Bosscha Observatory in Lembang in 1924, a once-leading research center in the southern hemisphere. Though, Nasution demonstrates that passion for the cosmos can flourish beyond traditional institutions. Despite a background in food technology education, his lifelong fascination with the night sky – sparked by clear views of the Milky Way from his childhood home in North Sumatra – propelled him to share his knowledge widely.
Nasution began astrophotography at age 14, utilizing improvised equipment. This hobby evolved into popular educational content on TikTok,gaining widespread attention after a video warning against viewing the sun without proper filters went viral,reaching tens of millions of viewers. He later began routinely sharing astronomical facts in an accessible and engaging manner.
His impact was further solidified during a live broadcast of the September 2025 lunar eclipse, attracting 1.4 million viewers internationally and demonstrating the power of entertaining and educational science communication.
“His services are not only for Indonesia, but for the world,” stated Bima Nasution, speaking at the Indonesian Media Office on September 11th.
