Billa Ends Food Delivery: What You Need to Know

Billa shifts Strategy, Ends In-House Grocery ⁢Delivery in Eastern Austria

Vienna, Austria ‍- November 20, 2025 – Billa, a leading Austrian supermarket chain, will discontinue ⁢its own⁢ home delivery ⁢service‌ in Eastern Austria at‌ the end of January,‍ marking a⁢ complete exit from independently operated food delivery. The move will result in the closure of two ⁣Billa warehouse ⁣locations in⁤ Vienna.

The decision comes as Billa refocuses its ‍online efforts on express delivery through ‌a partnership ⁣with Foodora ⁤and its ⁢existing Click & Collect service. According to a company release, the strategic change is a response to⁣ “changing customer behaviour and ⁣the rising costs of the last mile.” Approximately 250 employees at the Vienna warehouse ‍locations will be offered positions within the company, while the ⁤impact on deliverers employed by external companies is ⁣also being addressed.

Billa had already scaled back⁤ its online delivery service, ending ‌home delivery outside the greater Vienna area at the end of 2024 after⁤ nine years, citing economic reasons. In 2024, billa and Bipa collectively generated €114 million‌ in online sales. The online shop itself ⁢will remain ‌operational, with smaller Billa ⁤orders now available for delivery via ⁣Foodora⁤ in ⁣Vienna,‌ Graz, Linz, Traun, Salzburg, and Innsbruck.

The supermarket chain significantly expanded its online presence as 2015, ‍offering⁤ nationwide delivery by 2024 ‌and opening its first ⁤Vienna-based online warehouse in 2017, followed ⁢by a second in 2020. While online grocery ⁤retail experienced a surge during⁣ the COVID-19 pandemic, demand has since ‍normalized. Interspar also ceased food deliveries earlier this year.

Competition in the Vienna ‍online‌ grocery market includes Alfies, Gurkerl, hausfreund, and Hofer (through Roksh). Notably, MPreis and Unimarkt have also recently⁣ closed their online shops due to economic challenges.
