Armored Vehicle Stops suspected Stolen Big Rig After High-Speed Chase
FONTANA, Calif. – A dramatic police pursuit involving a suspected stolen big rig ended Wednesday wiht an armored vehicle, known as a BearCat, successfully blocking the truck’s path and leading to the surrender of its occupants. The chase unfolded across multiple Southern California freeways, prompting a significant law enforcement response.
The incident highlights the unique challenges and escalating tactics employed when pursuing large commercial vehicles, where officers must account for increased risks related to potential weaponry and limited access to the vehicle’s interior. the triumphant intervention by the BearCat underscores the growing reliance on specialized equipment to safely resolve potentially hazardous situations involving oversized vehicles.
Fontana Police officer Steven Reed confirmed that several unmarked SUVs, occupied by officers in tactical vests, also participated in the chase. The pursuit concluded when the BearCat positioned itself ahead of the big rig, effectively halting its progress. An officer then exited the armored vehicle through a rooftop porthole, aiming a rifle at the truck’s passengers, who afterward surrendered as officers converged on the scene.
“There’s a lot more to watch on a bigger vehicle like that and trying to watch inside the vehicle and see what movements they’re doing,” Reed explained during a live broadcast with KTLA. “Access can be different and there could be weapons inside the vehicle.”
Authorities have not yet released details regarding the identities of those inside the big rig or the specific charges they may face. The inquiry is ongoing.
