The company’s ranking process considered online reviews, popularity, user feedback, pricing, and POS USA’s own experience with various systems.
According to a spokesperson for POS USA, the selection criteria focused on “reliability and quality at the best price point” alongside features essential for successful business operation. The spokesperson emphasized the breadth of available restaurant technology, stating, “There is a lot of restaurant tech out there, and our team reviews new and popular systems on a regular basis and we put together this list to help people make informed decisions.”
The 2021 list identified Toast POS as the “Editor’s Choice,” citing its comprehensive restaurant management capabilities and modern touchscreen interface, positioning it as a new industry standard. Clover Station was recognized for its versatility, suitable for counter service, quick service, and full-service restaurants due to its Android-based, all-in-one design. Harbortouch Bar & Restaurant (HBR) was highlighted as one of the most robust systems available. TouchBistro was named the leading iPad POS solution, recognized as a pioneer in tablet-based systems for the restaurant industry. Rezku POS, based in Sacramento, California, was too included as a notable newcomer in the iPad POS market.
A June 30, 2025 report by Owner.com highlighted the importance of a fast and efficient POS system for cafes, noting that a slow system can drive customers away in a competitive market. The report emphasized the require for systems that handle order modifications—such as milk types and syrup shots—easily and efficiently. Square, Toast, and Clover were identified as top picks, offering a balance of usability, loyalty tools, and flexibility.
The Owner.com report stated that with over 83,000 coffee shops operating in the U.S., competition is intense, and a slow POS system can negatively impact both customer experience and sales. The report underscored the value of features like fast order entry, clean interfaces, and loyalty programs in maintaining a competitive edge.
