Bengaluru: Police Booked After 22-Year-Old Dies in Rehab Center

BENGALURU – Four police officers, including the inspector of Viveknagar police station, are facing charges following the death of a 22-year-old man, Darshan, who was found deceased at a private rehabilitation centre in Madanayakanahalli on Wednesday.
Mother alleges Custodial Violence and Negligence
Darshan’s mother, Adilakshmi, filed a formal complaint accusing personnel from the viveknagar police station and the unity Social Service Trust Rehabilitation Centre of custodial violence, illegal detention, and criminal negligence leading to her son’s death.
Initial Detention and Transfer to Rehab
According to reports, Darshan, a resident of Sonnenahalli in Koramangala, was initially taken into police custody on November 12th after an altercation near his home. Police state he allegedly brandished a machete during the incident.
three days later, on November 15th, the viveknagar police reportedly arranged for Darshan’s admission to the Unity Social Service Trust Rehabilitation Centre located in Adakamaranahalli.
“Tortured and Beaten” – Mother’s Account
“My son was tortured and beaten while in custody and then admitted to the rehab centre. He was in immense pain.Despite my repeated pleas, the police refused to allow me to see him. I begged them not to send him to jail, offering to take him to a de-addiction centre myself.The torture he endured left him unable to walk. the police demanded and I paid Rs 2,500 for his admission to the rehab, and the centre continually assured me he was improving.”
Victim’s Struggle with Alcohol Addiction
Darshan was reportedly struggling with alcohol addiction prior to his detention.his mother’s complaint alleges that the police were aware of his condition and should have handled the situation with greater care.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Darshan’s death. The investigation will focus on allegations of custodial violence,the conditions at the rehabilitation centre,and the actions taken by the Viveknagar police.
