Ben Shelton Defeats Khachanov to Win First Masters 1000 Title

Toronto, ON – Ben Shelton, 21, has captured the 2023 National Bank Open title in Toronto, defeating Karen Khachanov in a thrilling three-set match, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3. The victory marks Shelton’s first ATP Tour title adn a significant breakthrough for the rising American star.

Shelton, who previously defeated Khachanov in their only prior encounter at the Indian Wells Masters in March, immediately established control, securing an early break in the first set. His aggressive play and powerful serve proved challenging for the Russian to handle.

The second set proved to be a tense affair, with both players holding serve until a crucial point at 3-3. A slightly mishit forehand from Shelton landed in the net, resulting in a break for Khachanov. Though,Shelton responded,breaking back at 5-5 after a forehand from Khachanov clipped the net. Khachanov ultimately won the set in a tiebreak, 7-5.
