Ben Affleck Tells Variety He Was Banned From Instagram Twice
In an interview with Variety, actor Ben Affleck revealed that he has been banned from Instagram twice for impersonating himself, while also discussing social media, his split from Jennifer Lopez, and maintaining privacy.
Why Ben Affleck Created Secret Instagram Accounts
Affleck explained that he initially established a hidden presence on the platform solely to monitor his children online. However, platform security filters flagged the profile. Affleck stated he had accumulated just six followers, consisting of his children and a few of their friends, before automated moderation kicked him off for identity fraud twice.
Reflecting on the evolution of digital footprints, Affleck contrasted the modern era with past decades. Having experienced a large portion of his life away from constant public documentation, the actor emphasized the value of personal privacy.

Views on Acting Illusion and Celebrity Influencers
Expanding on his aversion to personal social media use, Affleck argued that actors diminish their craft by overexposing their daily lives. Comparing his perspective to revered industry peers, he remarked that seeing what performers eat for lunch does not enhance appreciation for their work. “I realise I sound like an old, out-of-touch person, but I believe that as an actor you have to maintain an illusion,” Affleck told Variety.
At the same time, Affleck expressed profound respect for how his former partners, Jennifer Garner and Jennifer Lopez, have successfully built and maintained massive digital audiences. Addressing Lopez specifically—following their 2024 separation—Affleck defended her artistic contributions despite a lack of recent awards recognition. “I have an enormous amount of respect and admiration for what she can do,” he said. Addressing why commercial success does not always translate to accolades, he added that awards are part of a subjective business where people bring personal biases.
Despite acknowledging that cultivating an online following is genuine work, Affleck insisted he would make a poor influencer. When considering the prospect of unboxing videos or online endorsements, he admitted he simply lacks the temperament for digital brand management. He noted that his longtime creative partner and friend, Matt Damon, shares an equally conservative approach to social media, handling public scrutiny gracefully while preserving his private life.
Affleck also addressed his frequent status as an internet meme, famously dubbed “the beleaguered man” by one of his daughters. Noting that viral moments require a healthy sense of humor, he admitted that earlier events in his life and career occasionally fed the gossip mill, though he now accepts public fascination with a shrug.
