Ben Affleck Explains Casting Changes for New Netflix Film Animals
Ben Affleck came close to casting his ex-wife Jennifer Garner as his love interest in the upcoming Netflix crime thriller Animals before ultimately recasting the role with Kerry Washington. Speaking about the directorial project slated for an October 9 release, Affleck revealed that personal scheduling and off-screen relationship history dictated the major casting shakeup.
Scheduling Realities and Initial Intentions
Affleck, who directs himself for the fifth time in the picture and plays the lead character Mark, originally viewed Garner as an ideal fit for the role of his character’s wife. Sharing children Violet, Fin, and Samuel, the former couple coordinated a week-on, week-off custody schedule. Affleck noted that casting Garner would allow both parents to see their children more consistently during production.
Beyond logistics, Affleck also saw the project as a strong career opportunity for Garner. Her recent screen work included a cameo as Elektra in 2024’s Deadpool vs. Wolverine and leading 2023’s Family Switch. He believed the gritty feature would let her explore material she had not yet tackled on film. When a high-profile production delay hit the schedule, however, those plans shifted.
Production Delays and the Recasting Process
Production plans unraveled roughly two weeks before filming was scheduled to begin. Affleck learned that Spike Lee and Denzel Washington were mounting Highest 2 Lowest, a 2025 release centered on a music mogul whose son is taken by a kidnapper played by A$AP Rocky. Because Animals follows a mayoral candidate and his wife resorting to extreme measures to pay a son’s ransom, Affleck worried audiences would view his film as a competing version. He recalled his past involvement in simultaneous asteroid projects, joking, I’ve already been in one of the two asteroid movies.
Although Affleck initially considered delaying the release date, he momentarily walked away from the production. A couple of months later, his enthusiasm returned, but his producing and acting partner Matt Damon was no longer available to play the lead role due to commitments on Odyssey. Affleck stepped into the lead role himself, which created an immediate creative hurdle regarding his on-screen dynamic with Garner.
Navigating Public Baggage Onscreen
Once Affleck decided to play Mark opposite his ex-wife, both actors recognized that portraying a rocky marriage might distract viewers. In interviews, Affleck explained that he spoke with Garner about the potential pitfalls, recalling that she noted they did not want to project their relationship history onto the screen. Garner pointed out the distraction of viewer baggage, leading to the mutual decision to recast. Kerry Washington ultimately assumed the role of Mark’s wife.
Despite the casting change, Affleck emphasized his ongoing professional admiration for Garner. Describing her as fabulous and noting that they remain close friends and co-parents, he expressed a desire to collaborate with her on future projects under different circumstances.
