Bayern Munich Women Beat SL Benfica 3-0 in Champions League

October 1, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

On September 30, 2026, the women’s football team of FC Bayern Munich secured their first victory of the UEFA Women’s Champions League season, defeating SL Benfica 3-0 away at the Estádio da Luz. Goals from Klara Bühl in the 74th minute, Pernille Harder in the 80th minute, and Franziska Kett in the 88th minute delivered the three points for the German double-winners in Group play.

Overcoming a Slow Start in Lisbon

Heading into the fixture following a narrow 2-2 draw against Manchester City and a difficult DFB-Pokal match against second-division side Borussia Mönchengladbach, head coach José Barcala heavily rotated his squad. Only Franziska Kett and Jovana Damnjanovic retained their spots in the starting lineup. The first half yielded virtually no scoring opportunities for the visitors, culminating in a scoreless deadlock at halftime. Sportdirektorin Bianca Rech expressed severe dissatisfaction during her halftime interview with ZDF, stating that the team lacked efficiency and urgency in the final third.

Late-Game Surge Secures Victory

The breakthrough arrived in the 74th minute when Klara Bühl drove a long-range shot off the inside of the post and into the net past Benfica goalkeeper Lena Pauels. Pernille Harder extended the lead six minutes later with a clinical finish, before Bühl assisted Franziska Kett for the third goal in the 88th minute. The 3-0 result moves Bayern forward in the league phase as they prepare for a demanding stretch of fixtures against Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Austria Wien, and reigning champions FC Barcelona.

Elsewhere in the competition, FC Barcelona established dominance with a 6-0 victory over AS Rom to claim the top spot in the group standings. Arsenal secured a 2-2 draw featuring newcomer Lisa Baum in the starting XI, while Selina Cerci and goalkeeper Anneke Borbe did not feature. Bayern will resume their European campaign on October 28 against Real Madrid.
